WESSLING Group Granted Ideas with Prize Money of 10,000 Euro

Winners of Innovation Award Celebrated Like Football Stars

Fan chants at the stadium, one’s own face on a mega screen: this year’s winners of the WESSLING Innovation Award were celebrated at the company group’s branch in the Ruhr area. In 2015 four ideas from France, Hungary and Germany had been selected for the award. Company founder Dr Erwin Weßling had initiated the prize in 2008; since then the best ideas have been granted annually prize money of a total of 10,000 Euro. 1,200 employees at eight European locations as well as China work on improving quality, safety, environmental and health protection, and thus quality of life.

Frédéric Geay from the WESSLING branch in Lyon was awarded for his innovation in gas chromatography. Thanks to his idea, the analysis and cleaning of highly sensitive analysis equipment can take place simultaneously, which is a gain of efficiency for clients as well as the company.

Biogas experts Matthias Post and Benedikt Baackmann together with IT specialists Tobias Rolfes and Maik Hövermann, both from the WESSLING branch in Altenberge, developed software which is able to register and analyse biogas samples more efficiently. Customers will profit from this particularly during the “hot harvesting time”, when waiting under high pressure for laboratory results.

Innovation management is a main asset of WESSLING’s daily routine, which means the permanent and consistent development and implementation of new ideas.  
The winners of the Innovation Award are invited to the annual international meeting that takes place at alternating international branches including Germany. Seventy executives from Europe and China, together with the shareholder family, will exchange on strategies and corporate culture. “This time we are going to meet in the Ruhr area, because we will also celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Bochum branch”, Dr Heinrich Ruholl explains. Being the managing director of the international group, he and Dr Stephan Simon are proud that the high proportion of women in the company is also reflected in the number of female executives. Five out of nine subsidiaries are managed by women.

Gábor Szunyogh from Budapest had the convincing idea to invite pupils in Hungary to a lab adventure. In Hungary this kind of interest in natural sciences is completely new among young people and was met with great enthusiasm.

Usually Christian Roger Fechner and Nils Rudolf from Hanover are responsible for qualified sampling, now they stood on the winners’ rostrum. They designed and built a new instrument for water sampling in particularly deep waters. Apart from its precision, their specialised instrument is characterised by easy handling during sampling.
