Microbiological product safety is one of the most important factors in the safety assessment of cosmetic products. Our services include the analysis of end products, bulk goods and cosmetic raw materials.

Microbiological tests at WESSLING

Microbiological safety of products is one of the most important factors in assessing the safety of cosmetic products. The lack of contamination of cosmetics with dangerous microorganisms is one of the conditions for allowing the product to be marketed in the European Union. Our services include testing the purity of end products and cosmetic raw materials.

Sources of microbial infections in cosmetic products

Contamination of cosmetics with microorganisms can occur both, at the stage of production and its use. In the manufacturing process, it is crucial to monitor the microbiological cleanliness of the production line, work surfaces and indoor air. The hygiene of protective clothing and hand hygiene of the personnel employed in the production is also of great importance. Frequent microbiological analysis of cosmetics allows to minimize the risk of contamination. As a consequence, the offered product will retain its texture, smell, color and healing properties for longer.

Not all cosmetic items are equally susceptible to contamination. The microbiological purity of cosmetics is easier to maintain in the case of preparations distinguished by low water activity or extreme PH values (e.g. peelings, lip balms). The multiplication of microorganisms is also limited by the high content of alcohol (over 20%) and solvents in the composition. Despite the existence of general dependencies, the risk assessment should be carried out for each cosmetic product.
