Every food business operator in the European Union who places a food on the market and every importer of food from outside the European Union is obliged to provide consumers with complete information about their products by labeling them in a correct way.

Guidelines on the proper way of providing information to consumers about food by labeling foodstuffs are set out in Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 25 October 2011. This document defines both - the method of providing information about food and the scope of information that should appear on the labels of foodstuffs.

Correct food labeling is the responsibility of the operator who places the product on the market, and at the same time it is also the right of every consumer, whose choices may be dictated by health, ethical or other considerations. Information on nutritional composition and characteristics is extremely helpful for people with special dietary requirements, including people with food allergies. The method of storage, durability of the product and the use-by date are giving an overview of how quickly the product must be used and what temperature will guarantee its freshness. All information contained on the label is aimed at a high level of protection of the consumer, his health and social and economic interest.
